RE: the "tin-foil hats" -- there's a sociology paper that points out that throughout human history, people have a tendency to mock ideas that do not place humans at the center of the universe. (IE, like the idea that the earth revolves around the sun, and that the universe, does not in fact, revolve around the earth). Could hostility toward the idea of life on other planets (i.e., life does not revolve around humans) be a continuation of that tradition?
