$15k doesn't seem exorbitant, sadly. Club polo in the Bay Area runs around $300-$450 per month. Clinics run about $100-$200 for a few hours, figure at least one and a half per month. Travel tournaments add both tournament costs and travel costs, figure a grand per as parents travel, too, with 5 or 6 a year. Covid in CA forced teams to fly to Vegas, Utah, and even Texas for tourneys. It adds up very quickly. Fortunately, not a lot in equipment costs. Would imagine football to be more costly. . . .
Some kids start as young as seven, my daughter started at 12 and is behind the curve, but rapidly catching up. Don't think we've put in $30k total yet over the three years, but it's close. Importantly, she loves it and worked her ass off during covid on her own to get better.
To respond to 82's comment, we absolutely think our daughter has a shot to get a scholarship or preferential admissions. Thanks to Title IX, there are 34 D1 schools that field women's water polo teams, and not many girls play the sport, and very few play outside of CA. It's a numbers game. Fortunately, she's pretty good and getting better.
