Harbaugh was one class ahead of Paye, so they weren't direct competitors in terms of offers. I don't think Harbaugh was all-state at Paly and in any case had grown up in Michigan and his father and Bo Schembechler were close.
Paye was USA Today's High School Player of the Year, so being a home grown legacy wasn't the reason for Stanford's interest.
