A decent kick return, say to about the fifty, actually works in the Bills favor. That leaves time for only one play. Unless the return is all the way to the field goal kicker's range, that play is a Hail Mary, hook and ladder, or something else that has to go all the way to the end zone. It's possible you lose that way, but the much worse possibility, at least as I figure the odds, is giving Mahomes the ball at the 25 with time for three plays. Whst happened was not all that unpredictable. As I was shouting, you can't give him three plays when he only needs three to tie it, with an awesome kiker. What happened was exactly what I feared.
In our house, we have the unofficial rule that you can't criticize a play call unless you announce before the play what you think our team should do. I was all in on squib kick on this one, as you were. We were right, I believe. Not just from 20/20 hindsight. From what gave the Bills the best chance to win the game.
I think I saw that Josh Allen is the first NFL quarterback to throw four TDs in two straight playoff games, with no interceptions. Plus he saved lots of drives with his feet, sometimes on fourth down. You can't ask him to do more.
Edit: Yes, you can ask him to do more. The bum called it wrong on two coin flips in this game. He called it right in every regular season game (on the road, because visitors call the flip). Obviously he is a regular season bum who chokes in the playoffs. ;)
I also think it’s bunk that both teams don’t get the ball. Especially in the post season.

Sports PTSD is tough. Oh well.
I also was calling for a squib-ish kick.
I guess it's possible they were worried about a big return from Hill or another speedster, but still, I like the idea of potentially burning 4-5 seconds on a return. In the pros, can a return man player call a "fair catch" and have the ball set at 25 yard line, without clock running? I don't think so; but if so, then that may have been what Chiefs instructed to do. Still, I'd have given it a try.
That was a brutal L for the Bills and only adds to the complex suffered by the City of Buffalo and its fans. Talk about jinxed . . .
No on the fair catch. And, of course, you can’t fair catch a squib kick anyway.
