I have not (yet) heard a single American Olympian offer a word of protest regarding atrocities committed by the CCP, treatment of Peng Shuai or anything that would embarrass the Chinese government. So why would we expect Gu to do anything different? Those that think any athlete is going to say something about China doesn't understand what COULD happen to the athletes.
I believe the USA athletes were told to avoid any commentary of the Chinese government while in China as they might then get to "enjoy" China for quite a long time. Gu definitely would know that as a Chinese celebrity she just might not get to leave China ever again with incorrect answers.
It is almost unfair of these reporters to ask these types of questions of the athletes, as their cute attempt at gotcha could put some of these athletes in serious peril.
Those reporters should ask the gotcha questions to the IOC leaders in Switzerland.
When will the IOC reduce the cost of hosting the Winter Olympics so that more winter cities might once again think about hosting the games?
Will the IOC consider allowing multiple cities to submit a bid together? Much as FIFA has done with countries in World Cup bids.
When will the IOC disqualify potential host cities if they don't meet some type of minimum standard on a series of human rights issues implied in the IOC's cherished Olympism (human dignity, ethical principles, etc.)?
