I dont think Herbstreit would be pushing employee status if ESPN wasn't at least tacitly on board with that. Probably makes it simpler for them and they could really care less if college athletics outside of CFB, MBB, and WBB survives in any way.
I'm sure ESPN et al will be trying to influence how this develops to their advantage. Same for the schools. But while there are player advocacy organizations, not all player's views are represented necessarily.
What there won't be is any organization that represents the interests of college sports fans, and at least at this point, no organization explicitly of "nonrevenue" sports athletes.
