My son is at Santa Clara. Last quarter they had 3 student suicides. This quarter they rolled out training for all students, faculty, and staff on mental health awareness that includes how to recognize signs that someone might be having mental health issues and some options for how to approach/engage them. I wish they had made the training MANDATORY, and I hope that Stanford does make it mandatory.
I also think at a national level we need some PSAs from celebrities who have struggled with mental health and how they overcame them. Like it or not, celebs reach kids. Within the Stanford community, it'd be great to have athletes do the same if they're willing.
We have to get over the hump of the negative stigma and we have to improve our ability to recognize when someone else might be struggling. Both a tough hills to climb, no doubt, but is there really an alternative?
