That game was a case study for why the electronic strike zone is coming. Some of the worst ball/strike calls I've ever seen in my life. Just atrocious and embarrassing for any professional sport.

It can't come fast enough for me.  Here's a summary of the 5/1/21 game last year, which not only includes three straight strikes thrown by former Giant Mark Melancon against Wilmer Flores, but it includes a summary analysis at to how home plate umpire Adam Hamari favored home team San Diego in the overall strike zone. Incidentally, I seem to recall that the "strikes" thrown to Flores all measured between 2.5" and 3.5" outside the strike zone, using radar.

Hamari's basically middle of the pack, in terms of accuracy:

And here's a graph in which the Giants are the fifth "least-favored" team in terms of runs granted by ump calls.  A's have the second most, BTW.

I long for the days of yesteryear. Joe Ginsberg was catching, Bill Summers was umpiring and Ted Williams comes up and walks on four straight pitches. Ginsberg says, "Bill, don't you think that last pitch was a strike?" And Summers replied "Mr. Ginsberg, Mr. Williams will let you know when it is a strike."

BTW, if the infield fly rule had been in effect in 1941, Ted Williams would have hit .416.

Giants now 11-5, 10% of the season is done.  On track to win 111 games.

Giants are #13 in OPS in MLB, #5 in HRs, #9 in team strikeouts, #15 in Walks, #9 in SBs, and #4 in runs scored (#3 on a per game basis).  For pitching, Giants are #2 in ERA (Dodgers are #1) and #1 in reliever ERA at 1.78. Giants pitchers are #7 in WHIP, #5 in fewest walks, and #10 in most strikeouts. Also #1 in fewest HRs given up.

And just for fun...Connor Joe is 10th in MLB in OPS...and Seiya Suzuki, who the Giants didn't get, is #1 in MLB in OPS.
