I’ve been drawn to the game by some very professional young women who play fair, are committed to team ball, and celebrate one another’s accomplishments. It is with the same spirit that I have participated on the Cardboard.
When I see snarky or offensive exchanges, I feel that the supporters of the team aren’t carrying the same intention and spirit that the players do. Those postings denigrate the game indirectly. On a list serve such as this, participants are not face-to-face. Consequently, a rude or unflattering judgement of another person's words comes easy. There is no accountability when you don’t have to look someone in the eyes and express your point of view. If one is brusque and disrespectful, there is little opportunity to challenge that person.
Plus there is no tonal underlining is a written response, so it’s difficult to be playful or to measure a person's intention. That's why I have enjoyed the two halftime meetings I attended. It personalized the connection we have as fans. It would be a sad outcome if someone left this group because they felt bullied or abused by someone else or simply had to read offensive remarks. I hope that we can be guided by civility and respect!
Let our players show the way!
Well said. I've refrained from participating in all this up to now. I hope that I've not been seen as one of the snarky ones (tho I did use that word about myself in one posting a while back). I like the interaction and exchange of understanding of the game and play that I read on this board. That's why I participate. I don't like it when I have any sort of feeling about personal attack or negative exchange, suggestion that one person's opinion is better that another's. Yes, we can have differences of opinion and understanding, but we can also be supportive of the team and each other as we do so. I hope we can all go forward in that spirit. And what a great thought -- let our players show the way. Yes!
