Mick... I was there. Gaylord was traded for two reasons. Fox had scouted Sam McDowell in high school. This was before Sam roomed with a gin bottle. Fox hadn’t bothered to ask anybody about the later Sam. So on landing in Phoenix for spring training McDowell was arrested for drunkenness and disorder on the plane. It continued to go downhill from there.
The second reason was that Fox hated Gaylord. Some of it was because my dad and I accompanied him to his dad’s farm in Williamston N.C. in the middle of a road trip. Fox first blamed us but later went thermonuclear when he learned that Gaylord planned the trip. He couldn’t wait to trade Perry.
It was a sad time. Everybody but Jerry Donavan was filling Mr. Stoneham with half truths.
If Chub Feeney had not taken the NL presidency I think the club wouldn’t have sunk to the bottom.
