I'm a 41 year fan, matriculating on campus in 1981. Every 5-8 years we predict the end of Stanford football and the "might as well join the Ivies" echo rebounds of the latest failed season. I first heard it in a Daily editorial after Wiggins' dismal 1-10 1983 season. That was followed by Denny Green and Ty Willingham. Every Harris is followed eventually by a Harbaugh. And the echos die down. The lows are bad, the high's rival Everest for fans as they are unexpected and on either extreme we generally beat Cal. Sometimes we beat USC and Oregon too.
Thank God the AD muddled through after 83. If they hadn't we would have missed Walsh 2, Willingham's 100% Big Game victories, Harbaugh's resurgence, his Orange Bowl and his "biggest upset ever", Shaw's Rose Bowls, all the TDs thrown by Stenstrom, Edwards, Husak, Luck, Hogan and Davis. We wouldn't have known either McCaffery and missed both Dalman's. Gerhardt, Taylor, Love and Muster the ball carrier. Heck, I'd have missed the line play of DeCastro, Whitfield, Clark and all the Stanford Tight Ends that followed plus so, so many others.
So, let's figure it out. At Stanford a little moaning and grumbling is expected ... but then we figure it out. It's what we do. It's what separates us from the eternal mope-fest that is Berkeley where they always act like Holmoe is back for his 35th consecutive year. In Palo Alto Borgs and Stepfords wear themselves out, call a truce here and eventually figure it out. We're not Cal.
As a muse, who was clearly on a roll, cheered "What did you say? OVER? .... Was it OVER when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" And they figured it out (sort of).
He clearly hadn't gone to Cal.

In 1938 Neville Chamberlain declared "Peace in our time", Superman first appeared in Action Comics, Seabiscuit beat War Admiral ....... and C.a.l last won the Rose Bowl.
