I sort of agree but with somewhat different emphasis. In my view, this loss is almost completely on Shaw/coaching staff. We appeared to have a poor game plan and made no changes or adjustments I could see, and frankly I thought the play-calling was atrocious. The stubbornness in sticking with Nunes was truly frustrating. It was clear to me -- and has been since before the season -- that we need a passing game the opponent has to respect, and we didn't have that last night. If Josh's supposed strength and the reason he won the QB job is his ability to get us into the right play, we got none of his supposed strength last night while paying the price for his lack of accuracy and threat as a passer. But that's a coaching error. The coaches have to see the game that is unfolding before their eyes, and they didn't last night. I predicted UW would win with about 12 minutes to go in the 4th quarter -- any astute observer could sense the dramatic change in momentum and mentality, but apparently not DS.
But I completely disagree that the problem with our play-calling was too much passing too early. In my view it was precisely the opposite. UW was fully committed to stop the run, and our o-line simply was outnumbered and frankly not good enough right now to deal with that. We had to make them respect the pass in order to be able to run like we want. I don't (and didn't even before this game) think Josh has enough ability to do that. I am even more convinced of that now.Â
I disagree that Montgomery was a bigger reason for the loss that Nunes. Ty was terrible granted, and that's another place where a change should have been tried, but in my view all of these things were coaching errors. Every player will have a bad game. The coach has to have the ability to handle that without making the team pay the price. In my view, as well as UW played, they could not beat us unless we beat ourselves.
