Was at the opener in 1958. Had been a long range Dodger fan. Orlando Cepeda hit a HR in his first game and hooked me. Never a Mays fan and even less when I had to work with him.
The pennant races of ‘59 and ‘62 were magical. Ross Hodges was everywhere in The City with transistor radios held to peoples’ ear on the Muni, on Montgomery Street and in class with a smuggled headset and a radio hidden in a PeeChee. No stupid DLS and wildcards and NLCS. You got a reward for finishing first, the WS.

Also we got Johnny Lemaster, the awful Felipe Alou trade, Johnny Antonella and his shit attitude, Horace going broke and the threats to move to Toronto and Miami. But watching Marichal and one fantastic year from Bill Swift was worth the agony.

I'm always interested in pitchers like Krukow and Swift and Ron Bryant who have one amazing season in otherwise long careers.  The year before Swfit (who spent 13 years in MLB) went 21-8, he went 10-4 and led the NL in ERA with 2.08. The same year, John Burkett had his only 20 win season, going 22-7. Never won more than 14 otherwise.
