He's an exceptionally valuable player. Their fan base wants him badly and is hoping he is signed to an extension before hitting the free agent market. Trea Turner is the epitome of what the Giants need to increase the athleticism of their team, and he would subtract it from their enemy.
I don't want to hear about coming in second. The Giants' mandate is to sign him to a bigger deal than the Dodgers will give him. Period. Because that's how you win in free agency. If he doesn't sign an extension before the season ends, it may be a signal the Giants are telling his agent they are going to go big for him. I don't see much of a market for Turner beyond a few teams and that list doesn't include the Mets, Yankees, or Red Sox.
I can see Farhan sipping his morning Philz coffee and reading the Cardboard and hanging onto your every word.
If he isn't, he should be. Sometimes you can ignore fans and it won't impact the bottom line. Sometimes you can't. The Giants are now facing a time when they can't. Dodgers fans want Turner to re-sign badly. Giants fans want to see a signing that shows the team is committed to winning and entertaining them, and needs to massively upgrade its athleticism. This isn't complicated.
???
The day a team’s leadership starts making decisions based on the opinions of fans is the day a franchise collapses into a pile of rubble. Either leadership makes the right decision utilizing all the facts at hand or they don’t. In the case of the latter scenario, they are fired. This isn’t complicated.
I pre-butted this argument in my post. There is a lot of evidence and several logical arguments to make for why I say the Giants must listen to their fans about signing a big free agent star, and I have identified the one that would be the best signing - Trea Turner.
Are you going to actually claim the Giants wouldn't impress their fan base and gain a lot of equity with their fans if they sign Trea Turner? Give me one reason why Trea Turner wouldn't be a GREAT signing. "He will cost a lot" is not an acceptable answer.
I never said he wouldn’t be a good signing. Heck, I posted a comment a couple months ago to the effect. However, that is not the point. Since I am not Trea Turner I have no idea what motivates him. It could be money. It could be money with a chance to win a championship, it could be money plus living in an environment that meets his and his family’s needs, it could be a variety of other reasons. It will take more than a big paycheck.
On the other hand, Zaidi has to determine whether he is the right fit for SF. From all appearances, he is but there may be things Zaidi knows that have not been publicized. I doubt it but you never know.
Heck, the Dodgers were badly burned by Bauer when “fans” thought LA had pulled off a coup. No team wants that kind of a guy associated with their team.
Fans don’t know s…..
As for the general notion of signing a big name free agent hitter, yep, I’m on board and have been on board for several months. However, I defer to Zaidi regarding who would be the best fit for the Giants.
