I don't buy that those numbers are the real story.

First of all, avoid the middle man and go to the source of the numbers (2020-2021 school year). 

I don't see anything on the collegefactual site that says where they are getting their numbers. Maybe I just missed it. 
The Dept of Education site seems a good bet. 

Sources are listed at the bottom of the collegefactual page.  I didn’t see that they listed the year of the data.  The previous 2 years to last year would have atypical numbers.

The reference to Stanford playing football against Caltech is clearly an attempt at hyperbole. After 100 years of football, Caltech ended it nearly 30 years ago.  With a student body of about 700 (no athletic scholarships), it simply cannot get enough players.  Yet football games were important to the students, even with rare wins, even against teams you never heard of. That is probably why it continued as long as it did.  And, yes, classes trumped practice.

Interesting. Didn't realize Caltech had given it up. BTW MIT still has a team so Stanford could play them.
