The solution to being weak at a number of positions is to take the team's best player off the field?  Sorry this makes no sense to me.  I'm frustrated that Stanford is playing like crap this year, but "try anything and everything even if it's totally counterintuitive" doesn't seem like the right solution.

The team's best player?  Really?  I would argue that you are assuming facts not in evidence.  That line became something of a mantra among the pre-season press, most of whom just repeat what the others are saying.  I hope it becomes true, but right now can anyone honestly argue that his on-field performance has been better than all other players?  Putting that aside, my thought was not a 'try anything' strategy.  It was based on 52 seasons watching Stanford football.  McKee has great skills, but he is a pocket passer without a pocket.  And that's not a good thing with an OL that can't hold its blocks.  Patu could be a flop, nobody knows, but under the circumstances, I'd argue it is counter-intuitive NOT to try a faster, more mobile QB.  I'm not knocking McKee at all, but in this offense I think he's a fish climbing a tree.
