Luskin is director of the Stanford Forgiveness Project, “which researches the effectiveness of ‘forgiveness therapy.’“ He meets with the team weekly for meditation before “raising the day’s central theme, usually pertaining to the qualities of grit or the power of love,” among other things.
The basketball situation he talks about most is the pressure of being at the free-throw line with the game at stake. It’s a reminder of the actual situation that opens the article. In February against Oregon, Stanford had a 3-point lead late in the game when Agnes went to the line. She missed the first shot, but from the bench Cameron and Alyssa Jerome yelled, “You’re loved, Agnes. We love you.” She made the second shot, keeping the team in contention for the Pac-12 title, which it won later.
Tara credits Luskin for helping the team to be centered and together.
Looking ahead, it seems that Haley will be the point guard. Therefore, during the off-season she worked on dribbling and perimeter shooting with the aid of skills coach Packie Turner, who has worked with the likes of Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu.
For her part, Cameron worked with strength trainers and skills coaches along with NBA great Pau Gasol, who helped with footwork and post moves.
There’s a lot more in the article, so I recommend getting the magazine. I found it at Barnes and Noble in Redwood City.
Thanks for this recap! Sounds like a must read. And it confirms the theory that Jones will be PG, as well as my prior speculation that she would be working all off season to develop those skills.
Wouldn't it be something if the most improved player is Brink? Is there any way to get this SI edition on line?
