I don't know squat about WP but an ol' bud of mine was on the Stanford team years ago and would describe the "eastern Europeans" as mercenaries. Intimidating as all hell.

Indeed. It's the national sport, or close to it in Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, and Croatia, and really popular in Spain and Italy, even Germany as well.

Little known fact, water polo was one of the first team sports in Olympic history, debuting in 1900 with a few other team sports. The 1896 games only had individual competitions.
