Most schools coaches take a person off scholarship when they enter the portal.
Seems fair to me.  This came up in a conversation with another coach different sport

They should give that scholarship to Caleb Robinson asap, if they haven't already.  A year ago, there were five scholarship RB's on the roster (Jones, Peat, Smith Jr., Filkins, Barrow) and an incoming 4* recruit (Harris Jr.).  On Saturday, Robinson starts at the Rose Bowl.

Next next next next next man up.  Good for him for working hard and continuing in the program as a walk-on.  He's on the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll, too.
