Attendance was what it usually is for mid-week exhibitions, nothing different about tonight. Wish it was more but it is what it is for a game like this. After the slow start I was impressed. We will be just fine at guard. Jones did try to do too much early against the zone but it was a team-wide sluggishness I thought, not just her. First game nerves maybe. 25 assists and 8 turnovers in a game with this much subbing is very good. I thought Lepolo, Nivar and Harriel all played very well on offense and defense. It is not Jones or uh oh at point guard. There will be a learning curve, which is expected and fine. Emma-Nnopu did well but I am not convinced she is the optimum lockdown defender for some very quick opponents. Nivar looks like she could be. She is very quick and anticipates well. I know it is just Vanguard but 25 points given up is still good.
Bosgana looked very good. She really used her length well to steal the ball and rebound, and she looks much more in control and comfortable. She is quick enough to stay in front of smaller players and torment them with her length. She is a lot of fun to watch. The whole team is.
Returning players were all fine, not perfect, but we know what they can do so no comment except to say I don't think it was Iriafen's best night but she still looks like she will be an impact player. She is too talented and works too hard not to be.
Betts did not play that much and played in short stretches (most everyone did but hers seemed shorter). Looks to me like they are working her in slowly. She moves very well for her height and has soft hands and a nice shot from fairly far out. She should be a monster one day in the not too distant future. For now she has a bunch of upperclassmen in front of her. What a nice problem to have - how to get her more time.
Demetre does look much improved. The main issue is where to play her. Her defense against players close to her size should be fine but not sure about her guarding on the perimeter against quick guards, and we are so stacked inside. But she can be such a good shooter who can hit those fades easily when guarded, which is a brobdingnagian asset.
Everyone who played did some good things and nobody looked lost or out of place. We have a deep team that is very fun to watch. It was worth the drive even with an overmatched opponent. I'm not sure if we've seen so many really good passes out of so many different players in one game in a while, even in an exhibition.
