I'm a big fan of all the jumbo packages and power football that Harbaugh and company brought to Stanford. But Shaw's statements, made in August and early in the season, to the effect that the defenses can stack the box all they want, Stanford will continue to run the ball, sounds similar to the statements made by Mike Singletary and his offensive coordinator (Jimmy Ray Hart?) who found that strategy was a recipe for disaster. In fact, if I were looking around for an offense that the current Cardinal offense resembled, it would be the Niners of the Singletary/Hart era.
It's good to be committed to the run. Its asinine (to use a recently familiar term) to continue to run in the face of a stacked box, rather than getting imaginative and attacking the defense to force them to back the safeties up.
