The part of the Oregon strategy which is bothersome and that I'd like to see addressed with rules changes are the quick snaps when the defense doesn't have time to sub, align, etc. It seems to me they are successful in getting the officials to change their cadence to match what Oregon wants to do, i.e. the officials rush to spot the ball / move the chains when Oregon is doing their thing, but don't reciprocate by slowing down for the opponent. It would be as if baseball allowed pitchers to throw and umps called strikes before the hitter got both feet in the batters box. Is that indicative of skill by the pitcher? I don't think so.Â
Because it's legal now, I don't really begrudge them for it, but I'd like to see it changed. Fewer plays would be safer also, as many people are now figuring out and discussing publicly.Â
