However, you must remember that the number of hours that a coach can require of a player is now controlled by the NCAA, and exceeding it brings punishment, as our softball coach found out the hard way. Also, football players are on campus for the summer, which reduces the number of units they need to take each quarter, 4 quarters instead of 3 per year. On top of that, with the AP credits many of them have coming in getting to 180 isn't very hard.
I do think there is plenty of reason to examine the number of hours a player puts into their sport per season now vs ten years ago, and that might be very interesting. But it isn't because they take 21 units per quarter.
