The LSUMB is embarrassing. No one claps for them.  They are awful musicians so try and poke fun of opponents through “assholery” as someone shared.  

No class and surprised Stanford puts up with it.  I know I wouldn’t.

I am a season ticket holder, and I clap for them, and sometimes LOL, so I alone  disprove the claim that “no one claps for them.”

If there was a little blurb in the media kit that explained that the band is, and has been, a non-traditional scatter band for decades, I think it could help. Some audience members may not know that scatter bands arose as a countermovement to traditional bands with their traditional band music, marching in earnest, self-serious formation, while scatter bands played rock music, and “scattered” instead of marching, often with humorous themes (or attempts at humor). I think if more people knew that scatter bands brought rock and roll to football stadiums, more people would “get” what they are about. The AD blurb could also explain that LSJUMB halftime shows are student-written, student performed humor skits that were created within the last week, and usually do not reflect the views of the university or athletic dept.

I think scatter bands “look worse” because college football is a much bigger business now, with larger audiences and higher production values, and even traditional bands now play rock music, so it’s not obvious what scatter bands were a reaction to.

You could argue the AD doesn’t need to publish an explanatory blurb, but TV game commentators sound shocked to see the band. It’s like they assume that Stanford, a research powerhouse, “must” have a very serious band. They might also assume that Stanford must have a very dignified and serious entrance during graduation, and a very traditional motto in Latin.
