If you still have some ties to the LSJUMB leadership, I think you should have them read this thread.  There is some good, honest feedback here that may help them evolve.   There are some high quality musicians in the band (some that play with the Stanford symphony, wind symphony, etc...), but agree that there aren't enough of them.  Just as there aren't the same number of students at our games.   These are different times and many of these kids are heavily focused on other pursuits.   The same can be said of Stanford fans in general, as even when we were a top 20 team with a somewhat nicer stadium than the "Old Lady," we still weren't filling the seats.  

As for musical taste, I do think it's a generational issue as well.  Parents generally don't like their kids musical leanings.  My grandmother used to chide my mother about hers and my mother did the same to her kids.  I admit, I'm sometimes challenged by my kids musical tastes.   As someone stated earlier, perhaps on this issue there is a little bit (or a lot) of we are turning into the old farts we snickered at when we were undergrads.  I say let them have Fun and find their own Stanford way.
