On "American", "America" ...
From growing up in Canada I know that using it to describe people in or from the United States of America annoys a lot of people from other countries in the Americas. However, it's so common that Canadians still use it to describe such people even while complaining.
The Canadian shorthand for the country, however, is "The States" - with "America" used relatively rarely.
