According to a source White was going to accept the Stanford job but the department dragged its feet and Chris ended up as the coach. White took Muncie and Joe DeRosa, both of whom sat on the Stanford sideline at the Rose Bowl along with Theder and McCartney as assistants.

Yeah, I heard that White would have accepted the Stanford job had it been immediately offered to him, but Stanford did drag its feet and the Kal job opened. As an alum he jumped at that one and Stanford was left with Chris.

A good friend of mine was on the Plunkett RB team and he said White was, um, not exactly a low-key guy.  Which motivated some guys and didn't work too well with others.

OTOH Ralston was well-known for being a Dale Carnegie disciple.
