fivethirtyeight does this thing where they consider the best teams of the year, regardless of sport, by looking at their elo score throughout the year (they look at peak, average, and year-end, and then blend the three), and normalize it into a Z-score to account for differences in sports/conferences.  By that score, Stanford women’s basketball was 2.2 standard deviations better than the average women’s basketball team, which is the second best women’s basketball team (behind South Carolina), and the second best non-champion team (behind the LA dodgers).
