It seems that the dorm issue was the reason especially rooming with a non athlete.  From those in the know

Interesting.  That has long been the Stanford way--my dorm room was next door to a football player who was rooming with a non-athlete friend of mine his freshman year.  I think it was an effort to keep athletes integrated into the general student body and not (as many universities do) segregate them into athletic dorms.  But while that may work for freshmen, I wonder how it would work for transfer students.  And I also wonder whether Stanford's policies on living arrangements have evolved since I was there.  More recently I know many athletes seem to live off campus with teammates once they have been around a year or two.

and entering in Winter Quarter would provide more challenges as the transfer has to be slotted into an existing space, the likelihood of that being another athlete is probably low, the likelihood of a double opening up and putting two football transfers in it also seems low.
