That’s awfully cynical.

I have long felt that Shaw might be a better NFL coach than college coach.

There is a salary cap in the NFL, and a scholarship cap in college. The way to have a better roster in college is to be better at convincing high school kids, or to have better boosters, or to cheat. The way to have a better roster in the NFL is to evaluate draft prospects better, and Shaw is a well-known, well-respected evaluator of the NFL draft.

Coaches fresh from college also seem to have a leg-up drafting players they’d seen in college — think of Carroll drafting Sherman as a 5th rounder and Baldwin undrafted, and Chip Kelly drafting Ertz.

Shaw’s mellow demeanor might also go over better in a room of multimillionaire professionals. Pete Carroll has been complimented by players for treating players like adults.

And Shaw’s greatest weaknesses — thinking it’s a good idea to play Army or UCF, or kicking off the season in Australia, or promoting or retaining mediocre staff, or losing a competitive edge in player development — don’t matter in the NFL. The GM, league and owner make most of those decisions. There is no 10 coach limit, limited hours, interactions with only the S&C coach in the off-season in the NFL.

Another of Shaw’s weaknesses are the schemes that might work “if only” the line could give you enough time, or “if only” the team had has much depth as the competition, or “if only” they could bring in new players each year instead of being limited by a multiyear recruiting and development process. But in the NFL, if you suck one year, you can draft the #1 draft pick the next year. If injuries deplete an area, you can bid on free agents. It’s a totally different game in these respects.

My biggest concern is that coaching in the NFL is for young innovators with fresh ideas and a willingness to outwork and outplan the competition. That was Shaw in 2015, but he hasn’t demonstrated it lately. I don’t think Shaw is a slam-dunk, but in the NFL you can easily hire and fire someone quickly, and it won’t disrupt the recruiting process, etc. i think it’s worth a shot for someone. At this point, I’d sooner take a gamble with Shaw than with Belichick.
