Stanford's setter, Nathan Lietzke played in front of his home Austin crowd, and had 45 of Stanford's 57 assists. Stanford hit at a crisp .339 rate, and in general looked to be closer to midseason form than did Lewis. Frosh Theo Snoey let Stanford with 21 kills and just five hitting errors, hitting at a .500 rate. The other pin hitters, Will Rottman and Kevin Lamp had 12 and 10 kills, respectively.

Stanford got smoked by #4 Penn State. Regular setter Nathan Lietzke was replaced by 6'3" freshman setter Theoren Brouillette. For the unitiated, the setters are the quarterbacks in volleyball. For whatever reason, Coach Kosty decided to throw Theoren to the wolves. Penn State beat Stanford across the board in sets (3-1, losing 18, 17, 25-20 and 23), kills (52-39), hitting % (.313 to .242), blocks (8-3), aces (6-2).
Theo Snoey had a rough match, 8 kills and 9 errors for a negative hitting percentage. Everyone else had a decent match.
