Here's a good (and long) article about the effects of NIL on athletics departments, with a focus on North Carolina: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/24/magaz...hlete.html

The tl,dr is that money that once went to the whole department is now going to individual players, and it's not clear how departments are going to make up for that.  It's not an encouraging read if you're a fan of any sport besides basketball and football.

The University of North Carolina likely has some alums that believe in the academic mission.  I can imagine that a few schools will discover that not only are the former AD donations going directly to the recruits, but so are most donations that used to go to academic endeavors too.

And if it hasn't already, it will also take a bit out of coach salaries.

Really well done article. Even though most of what it addresses was predictable, there were several insightful anecdotes. Thanks for posting it.
