My wife's best friend dated a former 49er for a few years. Both were in their mid-30s. He had played well over 100 games as a DE/OLB and had double digit sacks for a few years. He was an All-Pro a few times.
He suffered so much brain damage that, three years after he had retired, his speech was literally unintelligible. I felt for him immensely. He was in good physical shape, but he couldn't carry on a conversation. I know he thought he was making perfect sense, but this was beyond occasional slurring.
