Obviously a nice weekend for the team after starting off 2-2; though it remains to be seen if Rice will be a decent team or not.
Some things I like:
- I always have a soft spot in my heart for guys who have been in the program for a while who finally break through. There seem to be two of those so far.
Anybody surprised Cobb was starting hasn't been paying attention. Since the end of last season Esquer has been talking about Cobb as a likely starter in the middle infield. Cobb got a chance to grab a starting spot in each of the past three seasons, but his bat never came around. Now it has.
Past 3 seasons - 0.170 BA, 0.481 OPS, 9 hits (3 doubles) in 59 plate appearances. [13 starts]
This year - 0.500 BA, 1.298 OPS, 15 hits (1 double, 2 triples, 1 homer) in 32 plate appearances. [7 starts]
Alberto Rios (Junior) has been buried in the depth chart at catcher. I think before this year he was best known for an exuberant celebration in the bullpen as somebody hit a dramatic (extra innings?) home run to cap a big comeback [unfortunately I forget the game - perhaps somebody here remembers?]. But Esquer said he had a great fall and seems to be moving in to the starting left field position in order to get his bat in the lineup.
Past 2 seasons - 0.000 BA, 0.125 OPS, 0 hits on 8 plate appearances.
This year - 0.409 BA, 1.064 OPS, 9 hits (3 doubles) in 27 plate appearances. [5 starts]
If Trevor Haskins does manage to claim a starting spot when he returns, it would be presumably at the expense of one of these two - though right now they have the top two BA on the team, and two of the top four OPS.
- Matt Scott - Frosh RH pitcher. Was drafted by the Rangers.
He's made three appearances. Did give up 3 walks in his first outing, since then only one bloop hit.
0.00 ERA. 5.2 innings pitched. 1 save. 1 hit allowed. 3 walks allowed. 3 appearances.

Worried about the start for Carter Graham. He's in a notable slump.
0.077 BA (only two hits so far, 1 HR 1 double), 0.496 OPS.
For a guy who last year led the Pac 12 in HRs and hit 0.331.
Ryan Bruno. Finished the year as the closer and/or setup guy. Was critical during the tournament.
So far. 18.00 ERA, 4.50 WHIP, leads team in walks with 7 despite only pitching 2.0 innings in 3 appearances.
Would like to see O'Rourke and Haskins back.
