Stanford cruised to a regional victory today. I believe that their total of -50 ties the school record for lowest ever 54 hole tournament score. According to the Stanford Record Book, -50 is also the NCAA record.
Clemson finished 2nd, 17 shots behind. Clemson actually outscored Stanford over the final 36 holes. But Stanford had an 18 shot lead over the Tigers after day 1 and no way would Clemson close that gap.
Rose Zhang and Sadie Englemann were tied with 9 holes to play. Then Rose stepped on the gas and won the individual title going away.
Final team scores
1. Stanford -50
2. Clemson -33
3. USC - 26
Final individual scores
1. Zhang -19
2. Englemann -15
T8. Xu -10
T13. Ganne -6
T49. Ye +5
Stanford advances to the NCAA championship in Scottsdale, AZ beginning two weeks from Friday. There were some top 10 teams that did not make it out of regionals - #7 Auburn and #8 Oregon. Also #11 ASU epically collapsed today to fall from 2nd to 7th in Raleigh and out of the postseason. Pressure is real! #3 LSU showed their mettle by getting 8 late birdies on the final 9 holes to sneak past Arkansas into the 5th and final qualifying spot at Palm Beach.
Nothing is a given. Remember that Stanford just squeaked past #27 Georgia in the quarterfinals and #17 Auburn in the semifinals last year. Seeding or ranking doesn't mean much once the tournament begins. But there is only one Rose Zhang and she plays for Stanford which certainly does help the Cardinal.
