A lot of prior service folks I know don't understand why anyone would associate the word "happy" with "memorial day."  The holiday is there to remember the ones who didn't make it home.  It's not a happy occurrence, but it is (for many) a necessary one.  We should remember the cost of military service and conflict.  

Now Ukraine's war for survival gives added meaning to the concept of Memorial Day.  May they have the future opportunity to remember the sacrifice paid by many to ensure the freedom of their nation.
