I don’t think the rules are crazy. If you recognize the intent of having a level playing field, then why should the big pockets school be allowed to spend lavishly while the somewhat less affluent school doesn’t?

If the rules aren't crazy, why have you come pretty close to the current definition of NIL.

The actual rules around NIL itself aren't so crazy. The complete walking away from enforcing those rules is kind of crazy - but given the high likelihood that any attempt at enforcement will bring a lawsuit, and apparently the NCAA would loose that lawsuit, I guess I would switch this to the category of heavily lamentable rather than crazy. 

p.s. The NCAA does have a lot of crazy rules, but that is largely because so many programs spend so much time trying to get around the spirit of each and every rule (i.e. cheating) leading to the rules being spelled out with ridiculous detail. 

p.p.s. The NCAA does a lot more than develop recruiting and eligibility rules. Among the tasks is setting the rules of play. If one were to abolish the NCAA, by necessity it would have to come back under another name. Even if one were to move to the cumbersome mode of separate rules body for each sport, that would still really just be an even more Byzantine NCAA by many other names.
