I would guess one of the European soccer leagues.
Bundesliga, La Liga, Ligue?
Like you, I would have guessed a soccer league in a soccer crazy European country, but no, it is not soccer a soccer league.
My next guess would have been something like cricket in India, but the “relative to population” part makes that wrong.
