We are on the precipice of some very bad things happening in our world that frankly make Stanford sports less important. I understand that they and sports in general are suppose to be an “escape” and talking about them is the Cardboard’s mission. But like it or not, this is also a community of people who come here for intelligent discourse and idea sharing.

It used to be that you could say “there are other places to discuss” whatever the non-sports topic might be that is provoking interest here. But with the scourge social media has become, where are those places? This board’s admin has even requested not to post from Twitter because it is such a firehouse of disinformation.

Like it or not, people come here because they trust the community to provide credible information and to hear different perspectives they might not get anywhere else, that don’t come with arguing and name calling. 

The Israel thread is unsavory, but it has honestly kept me sane reading so many perspectives and helped me work through how I feel about it. I could exclusively read news stories, but feel much better having it delivered by people I have respect for on this board adding their commentary, in part because so many news outlets have their own agendas or don’t present pertinent contexts. 

Iran is attacking U.S. bases. Turkey is aligning with Hamas and Israel has recalled its diplomats from Turkey. We’ve never seen such instability in our lifetimes and it is possible the safe zone this board is for so many will become even more valuable for the mental health of its members. It’s like when there is a disaster in your neighborhood and you find yourself talking to people around you who you’ve never talked with before. 

I believe the Israel thread and ones like it add more value to the board than any downside. And as always, if people don’t like its contents, they don’t have to read it.

Just my $.02 that probably isn’t worth that.

Not sure how old you are but I have experienced greater world instability in my lifetime….

Personally, I avoid all political conversation on websites.  One of the many things about this site that appeals to me is the “boxing up” of non-Stanford conversation into OT threads.  That gives the visitor an option whether or not they wish to participate.
