My granddad grew up in Potlatch, Idaho about 1/2 hour from Pullman. His dad owned auto dealerships and radio stations in nearby Spokane, but as my great grandfather told it, he "didn't want his son to attend WSU or U of I and turn into a drunk", so he applied on his son's behalf to Stanford...which is where granddad ended up. And as if to validate that assessment, my mother-in-law (from a farm in Eastern Oregon) attended Washington State for a year, but had a little bit too much fun, so her parents withdrew her from WSU and sent her to an all-women college.
