Maybe I missed it being discussed but evidently a bunch of the UW players including Penix had the flu, which would help explain why the game was unexpectedly close:

Suppose it's possible but strikes me as the CFB equivalent of how NBA stars suddenly become way more injured -- and are happy to let the press know about their ailments -- directly after being eliminated from the playoffs. In Washington's case, they have a committee to impress, or at the very least, do some explaining to.
