Without getting political, I will say imo she has never gotten the credit she deserves for advancing the cause of women in the law. I graduated from Santa Clara Law School in ‘85. It was the first graduating class that was 50% women. Today, women are a majority of graduates at elite law schools (of which S. Clara is not one!). Justice O’Connor was a trailblazer.
May she rest in peace.
Taking nothing away from SDO, who of course was a trail blazer, it's notable that women now significantly outnumber men in college enrollment, med school enrollment, and law school enrollment. Women also graduate college at much higher rates than men (and if I had data on law/med school graduation rates, I suspect it would show something similar). Men will continue to do well in certain fields, but the gender inequality gap is not done narrowing. I've read various attempts to explain the phenomenon, and I don't know which causes predominate, but as a girl dad, I couldn't be happier about the overall trend.
