I agree it was never true, which is why I think the rules now are better. But you're free to disagree about this.

That still doesn't have anything to do with the players themselves, they operate within the given system. Didn't somebody once say, "Don't hate the player, hate the game?"

Seems to apply quite literally in this situation.

But we all live in a world where the players are amateurs and scholar-athletes, where scholar comes before athlete. Never mind that those rules are for long ago, and -- frankly -- those rules never really applied across the board anyway.
