IMO it is inappropriate for an athlete (or anybody else) to send out a "tweet" to the world explaining their reasons/feelings about changing schools (or jobs). I don't know them personally and I have no business attempting to "judge" their actions one way or another. They don't owe me an explanation and I am in no position to evaluate the sincerity or validity of what is said. That said, if the athlete wants to broadcast to the world, they may. I doubt anyone takes it seriously, one way or another.

I am not their friend or co-worker. When people leave a position at work, they normally contact the people that they think will care (either in person or via email) and thank them for the good things about working together. They don't justify their actions because it isn't necessary. If there are hard feelings, an email isn't going to fix it.

Lets face it. Most of these athletes are "important" to us only because they went to Stanford. We may chose to become emotionally invested in their presence, but that is our choice, not theirs. They know nothing about us, and we know very little about them. Their lives are nothing like our lives, at least in the present. These "goodby" messages are pointless but harmless.
