Boy, you would HATE LinkedIn these days!

IMO it makes a big difference how you "structure" your network. Lots of people seem to add anybody at all who asks (or is recommended by LinkedIn itself). These folks somehow think the size of their network is somehow representative of "success". If you do that, you will often get personalities that are trying to make a "name" for themselves and you will get all kinds of messages that are "What???" material. If you only are in a network of people you actually know (or know of), you will get much less of that. You will  get some, as everyone has one or more "crazy uncles" in their network :-). As of now, I am not seeing many messages that aren't "cogent".
