If these situations are a result at least in part of the athlete's unsuccessful application to a Stanford graduate program, that seems like it should be fixable.

How is it "fixable"? If one applies and doesn't get in, who does what to fix it? As I understand it, most (all?) departments control their own admissions and if you aren't chosen, that is that. Am I wrong?
