Now we know why Hui was out of the lineup for UCSB--she flew down to San Diego to get ready for the WTA's San Diego Open, where she got a main draw wild card as a local kid.
She'll play 7th-seeded Donna Vekic in the first round, likely tomorrow sometime. Vekic is currently ranked #28 in the world and peaked at #19 a few years ago. Fair to say that this will be the toughest match Hui has ever played, so don't read too much into it if she gets double-bageled! But even just the experience should be fantastic for her, and it'll only benefit Stanford for the rest of the season.
