Doesn't really surprise me much. Great AAA pitcher, has nice mechanics, velocity, etc. Yamamoto's spring starts were an indication he wasn't yet ready to step in and dominate an MLB lineup. He allowed nine earned runs on 14 hits in 7.2 innings in his last two outings before Thursday. I know, I know, spring training statistics are meaningless, someone said. But some of his ratings, and his ultimate contract were...not consistent with his value, I'd thought. Personally, I don't think he should be paid more than Gerrit Cole...as he is.
And I know it's early, still...really glad the Giants didn't get him.
Had a Dr’s appt this morning and they had MLB-TV on in the waiting room. Sound was off but they were showing Yamamoto vs the Padres and examining his stuff ( break, control, velocity) in detail. He’s got good stuff with good control and varies his speeds well. Yesterday’s ump had a pretty generous strike zone though. Fastball seemed to top off at 95. Padres got a few key hits off his breaking balls but he looks like a keeper.
