Watched the Giants vs. Red Sox tonight. I noticed that the Red Sox had retired a lot of numbers (10). I looked it up, it was about average.

There are 16 original teams in MLB dating from the turn of the last century (Athletics, Braves, Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, Indians/Guardians, Orioles, Phillies, Pirates, Red Sox, Reds, Tigers, Twins, White Sox, Yankees)

Just an odd aside...there were five original Hall of Fame members; Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner. Only one has not had their jersey retired by their team. Which one?

Like some teams, I don’t think the Twins acknowledge the greats from the club prior to its relocation (the A’s are in that group).  Therefore, I would guess Walter Johnson.

Note:  Like Christy Mathewson, I don’t believe Johnson ever had a number on his jersey.  Of course, that didn’t stop SF from honoring Mathewson with a retirement disk.

You're right, it was Walter Johnson. And technically speaking, jersey numbers were introduced in 1929. Johnson wore #28 in 1931 and #25 in 1932. 

As for the answer to the "fewest" question...the A's have retired the fewest jersey numbers of all the original clubs, just five (Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson, Dennis Eckersley, Catfish Hunter, and Rollie Fingers. Nothing for Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, Eddie Collins or Eddie Plank. Cubs and Orioles have retired 6.

Yankees, by far, have retired the most numbers, 22.  Cardinals the most in the NL with 15. Giants have 13.

Most clubs don't venerate their pre-jersey number stars. According to the article, the only clubs that do are the Cardinals (Hornsby), Giants (Mathewson, McGraw), and Phillies (Grover Cleveland Alexander, Chuck Klein)
