I know nothing about Yu other than the little that folks here have said and my research about her WTA record, but based on her WTA challenger seasons in the spring of 2022 vs. 2023, it looks like her game really trailed off in the months before she enrolled at Stanford. After regularly making it deep into the draws of challengers her sophomore and junior years of high school, Yu won one match between Nov. 2022 and enrolling at Stanford in Sept. 2023.
So it's possible she simply isn't as good as she used to be, and/or her peer cohort has advanced more than she has, and rather than stew at the bottom of the lineup, she'd like to go someplace where she can regularly play her way back into form?
